Halloween Witch's Cauldron Hot Buttered Rum

This Halloween Witch's Cauldron Hot Buttered Rum is a warm, gently spiced Halloween cocktail rather than another chilled fruit drink. Dark rum, brown sugar and a small amount of butter make it rich without turning it into a heavy batter-based drink.

How to make it

How we test recipes

  1. Warm one heat-safe mug per serving by filling each with hot tap water; leave them to stand while you make the spiced butter.
  2. Put the softened butter and packed dark brown sugar in a small heat-safe bowl.
  3. Add the ground cinnamon, nutmeg and salt, then mash everything with the back of a spoon until evenly combined with no dry pockets of sugar.
  4. Bring fresh water to a boil in a kettle, then let it stand for 30 seconds so it is hot but no longer violently bubbling.
  5. Empty the warming water from each mug and divide the spiced butter mixture evenly among the warm mugs.
  6. Measure the listed amount of hot water and divide it evenly among the mugs. Stir each for 20–30 seconds, until the sugar has dissolved and the butter has melted.
  7. Measure the listed amount of dark rum and divide it evenly among the mugs only after the hot water and butter mixture are combined.
  8. Stir each drink for another 10 seconds so the rum is distributed and the surface has only a light butter sheen.
  9. Rest one optional cinnamon stick across the rim of each drink rather than leaving it in the liquid, where it can make the last sips woody.
  10. Let the drinks stand for 1 minute, check that they are comfortable to sip and serve warm.

Keep it smooth, not oily

Use butter that is soft but not melted when you mash it with the sugar. That paste disperses more evenly once the hot water is added. Add the rum after the boiling water has stopped bubbling; this preserves more aroma and makes the sequence safer around steam.

For a cold, smoky option, try the Midnight Mezcal Black Manhattan. The alcohol-free companion is the Mummy White Hot Chocolate. Browse Halloween cocktails.

The estimate counts the dark rum, butter and brown sugar; the spices, salt, water and optional cinnamon-stick garnish contribute negligible calories. The cinnamon stick is not eaten. The strength assumes 40% ABV rum and does not account for alcohol lost to the brief contact with hot water.
