How to make it

How we test recipes

  1. Put a small bowl and the mixer beaters or frother whisk in the refrigerator for 10 minutes; keep the heavy cream cold.
  2. Finely chop the white chocolate so it will melt quickly and evenly, then set it beside the stove.
  3. In a tiny bowl, stir the cocoa powder with the warm water until smooth. Transfer the cocoa paste to a corner of a small piping bag and snip a pin-size opening.
  4. Pour the whole milk into a small saucepan and heat over medium-low for 3–4 minutes, whisking occasionally, until steaming around the edges but not boiling.
  5. Reduce the heat to low. Add the chopped white chocolate a little at a time, whisking continuously for 1–2 minutes until it has completely melted and the drink is smooth.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat and divide the white hot chocolate evenly among heat-safe 8 oz mugs, using one mug per serving and leaving at least 1 inch of headroom.
  7. Pour the cold heavy cream into the chilled bowl and whip until it holds soft peaks; stop before it becomes stiff or grainy.
  8. Spoon the whipped cream into a clean piping bag, then pipe thin zigzag lines across each drink to resemble loose mummy bandages, leaving a small open area for the face.
  9. Pipe two tiny dots of cocoa paste into the open area on each mug, then use a toothpick to round the dots into eyes.
  10. Let the drinks cool for 2–3 minutes, have an adult check the temperature and serve warm with spoons.

Make a clear mummy face

Leave enough headroom so the cream stays inside the mug. Softly whipped cream is easier to pipe into narrow lines than aerosol topping or stiff cream. Keep the cocoa opening very small: the eye dots need only a little of the measured paste.

For a cold fruit drink, try the Frankenstein Honeydew Slush. Adults can make the Witch's Cauldron Hot Buttered Rum. Browse Halloween drinks for kids.

The estimate counts the whole milk, white chocolate, heavy cream and cocoa powder; water adds no calories. All of the drink and topping are used, with no pulp or solids discarded. This children's drink contains no alcohol, extracts or bitters and is 0% ABV.
