Halloween Smoky Mezcal Bloody Maria

This smoky mezcal Bloody Maria uses 1 1/2 oz mezcal, 4 oz tomato juice, 1/2 oz lemon juice, horseradish, Worcestershire and hot sauce. A celery stalk and two pimiento olives give it a Halloween finish.

The Halloween Smoky Mezcal Bloody Maria is a savory, spicy tomato cocktail served tall over ice. Mezcal gives it a gentle smoky edge; two pimiento-stuffed olives on a pick make an edible pair of eyes above the red drink. Stirring keeps the tomato juice smooth instead of foamy.

METHOD

How to make it

  1. Put the celery salt on a small plate. Moisten the outside rim of a tall glass with a little lemon juice and dip it lightly in the salt. Fill the glass with ice.
  2. In a separate mixing glass, stir the mezcal, tomato juice, lemon juice, horseradish, Worcestershire, hot sauce and black pepper until the horseradish is evenly dispersed, about 15 seconds.
  3. Pour over the ice. Add the celery stalk. Thread the two olives onto the pick with their red centers facing outward, and rest it securely across the rim. Serve immediately.

Recipe notes

Start with two dashes of hot sauce and add another after tasting if desired. For less mezcal smoke in the next glass, use 1 oz mezcal and 4 1/2 oz tomato juice. Keep the pick's pointed end away from the person drinking and remove it before sipping.

The olive pick should span the rim, with its pointed end facing away from the person drinking. Remove it before sipping or eating the olives.

Balance and party preparation

Start with two dashes of hot sauce: brands differ considerably in heat. After mixing, add another dash if you want more bite. If the mezcal smoke is too strong for your taste, use 1 oz mezcal and an extra 1/2 oz tomato juice for your next glass; keep the other ingredients the same.

For a small party, stir together the liquid ingredients and seasonings up to four hours ahead, cover and refrigerate. Stir again before pouring 6 oz of mixture per glass over fresh ice. Prepare the olive picks ahead but add the celery just before serving.

This drink is deliberately different from the sweet Candy Corn Martini and the berry-forward Blackberry Witch Fizz. For a children's drink at the same table, see the Midnight Plum Grape Slush, or browse the Halloween drinks collection.
