Halloween Monster Cauldron Root Beer Floats for Kids

These Monster Cauldron Root Beer Floats turn the natural foam from root beer and vanilla ice cream into the Halloween effect. Removable paper monster sleeves decorate the outside of the cups, so the drink needs no food coloring, candy garnish, extracts or bitters. Use caffeine-free root beer labeled non-alcoholic.

How to make it

How we test recipes

  1. Chill the root beer and six clear 12 oz cups for at least 2 hours. Keep the ice cream frozen until assembly.
  2. Cut six strips of black paper long enough to wrap around the lower half of the cups. Cut two square eye openings and one wide zigzag mouth in each strip.
  3. Wrap one paper strip around the outside of each empty cup and secure it with removable tape. Keep all paper and tape below the rim and away from the drink.
  4. Put the decorated cups on a rimmed tray to catch foam.
  5. Measure 1/4 cup of the chilled root beer into each cup.
  6. Measure 1/2 cup of vanilla ice cream for each serving and lower it gently into the matching cup.
  7. Divide the remaining root beer evenly, slowly pouring about 1/4 cup down the inside of each cup. Pause whenever the foam approaches the rim, then continue after it settles.
  8. Serve immediately with spoons. Remove the paper sleeves before washing or recycling the cups, and do not put paper, tape or any loose decoration into the drink.

Control the foam

Cold root beer foams more predictably than warm soda. Pouring half before and half after the ice cream creates the bubbling cauldron top without overfilling a 12 oz cup. Assemble on a tray and pour slowly; if one float rises too fast, move to the next cup and return after the bubbles subside.

Check the label for caffeine-free and non-alcoholic root beer. Do not substitute hard root beer. The paper faces stay outside the cups and are not garnishes.

For a fruit-based option with a different texture, see the Witch's Swamp Kiwi Chia Punch. The adult companion is the Pumpkin Oloroso Sherry Cobbler. Browse Halloween drinks for kids.

The estimate counts all root beer and vanilla ice cream. There is no edible garnish or discarded pulp. Paper sleeves and tape are serving supplies and add no calories. The drink is 0.0% ABV; brands and scoop density can change the calorie estimate.
