Halloween Witch's Swamp Kiwi Chia Punch for Kids

This Witch's Swamp Kiwi Chia Punch is a fizzy green Halloween drink for children. Blended kiwi and cucumber make the “swamp,” while fully hydrated chia seeds create safe, edible black speckles. It is completely alcohol-free, with no bitters, extracts, kombucha, candy or food coloring.

METHOD

How to make it

  1. An adult measures the chia seeds into a small bowl, adds one-quarter of the measured cold water and whisks for 30 seconds so no dry clumps remain.
  2. Leave the chia to hydrate for 15 minutes. Stir it again after 5 minutes and after 10 minutes; it is ready when the seeds are suspended in a loose gel with no dry centers.
  3. While the chia hydrates, an adult puts the peeled kiwi, peeled chopped cucumber and granulated sugar into a blender.
  4. Add the remaining measured cold water, secure the blender lid and blend for about 45 seconds, until the mixture is smooth and no fruit chunks remain.
  5. Pour the green mixture into a clear 3-quart punch bowl, using a silicone spatula to scrape in the puree left in the blender. Do not strain it.
  6. Scrape the hydrated chia gel into the punch bowl and stir until the seeds are distributed evenly.
  7. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for 20 minutes, or until the mixture feels cold. Keep the sparkling water refrigerated.
  8. Just before serving, slowly pour the measured chilled sparkling water down the inside of the bowl.
  9. Stir gently once or twice to combine without knocking out the bubbles.
  10. An adult ladles the punch into the selected number of clear cups, dividing it evenly. Stir the bowl gently between rounds if the chia begins to settle, and serve immediately.

Hydrate the chia before serving

Do not add dry chia seeds straight to the finished punch. Soaking them in measured water first lets them absorb liquid evenly and makes the final texture predictable. Stirring twice during the 15-minute soak breaks up clumps. The punch is intentionally left unstrained, so all of the blended fruit and its calories remain in the bowl.

Use ripe green-fleshed kiwi for the brightest color and sweetest flavor. Peel both the kiwi and cucumber before weighing or measuring them. Taste the blended base before chilling; if the kiwi is very tart, dissolve one additional teaspoon of sugar into the mixture and remember that the displayed calorie estimate will no longer include that adjustment.

The estimate counts the kiwi, cucumber, granulated sugar and chia seeds. Cold water and unsweetened sparkling water add no calories. No pulp is discarded because the punch is not strained. The drink is 0.0% ABV.
