Halloween Shrunken Apple Head Punch for Kids

This Shrunken Apple Head Punch is a warm, entirely alcohol-free Halloween drink for children. Cloudy apple juice and cinnamon make the punch; shallow faces cut into floating apple halves provide the spooky effect without candy, colorings, extracts or bitters.

How to make it

  1. An adult pours the cloudy apple juice and water into a medium saucepan and adds the cinnamon sticks.
  2. Set the saucepan over medium heat. Warm until the liquid is steaming and small bubbles appear around the edge, about 5 minutes; do not let it boil.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and keep the punch gently steaming for 10 minutes.
  4. While the punch warms, an adult washes the apples, cuts each one in half through the stem and removes the seeds and hard core with a small spoon.
  5. Set the apple halves cut-side up. Using the tip of a small paring knife, an adult cuts two shallow eye holes and one shallow mouth into each cut face. Keep the cuts simple and do not cut through the peel.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Use tongs to lift out and discard the cinnamon sticks.
  7. Let the punch stand for 5 minutes. An adult checks that it is warm rather than scalding before serving.
  8. Set out one heatproof 12 oz mug per serving. Divide the warm punch evenly among the mugs, about 1 1/4 cups per serving.
  9. Place one carved apple half cut-side up on the surface of each mug. If a half tilts, trim a thin slice from its rounded peel side on a cutting board and return it to the mug.
  10. Serve with teaspoons so children can move or remove the apple. An adult must handle the stove, knife, hot saucepan and pouring.

Make the floating faces safely

Choose small apples so one half fits inside the opening of each mug. A firm red apple keeps its shape and leaves a thin red outline around the pale face. The shallow cuts do not need to be neat: uneven eyes and mouths make the heads look more weathered.

Use cloudy apple juice, not hard cider. Check the package for a 0.0% alcohol statement or an ingredient list containing only juice; products labeled hard cider are alcoholic. This recipe contains no bitters or flavoring extracts.

The punch should steam but never reach a rolling boil. Allowing it to stand before serving reduces the burn risk, but an adult should still test the temperature. Make the apple heads while the pan is on low heat, and keep the knife work away from children.

The floating halves are presentation pieces and may be eaten with a spoon if desired. Their calories are not included in the displayed estimate because the amount eaten varies. For another warm children’s option, see the Pumpkin Patch Steamer. The adult companion is the Haunted Scotch Tea Highball. Browse the Halloween drinks collection.

The estimate counts the measured apple juice and cinnamon sticks. Water adds no calories; the cinnamon sticks are discarded, and the optional amount eaten from the apple garnish is excluded. The drink itself is 0.0% ABV.
