How to make it
- An adult brings the measured water to a boil in a kettle and pours it into a heatproof measuring jug.
- Add the measured butterfly pea flower tea bags. Steep for 5 minutes, then lift out and discard the bags without squeezing them.
- Add the measured granulated sugar to the hot blue tea. Stir until the sugar has completely dissolved.
- Let the tea cool for 5 minutes, then refrigerate it for 25 minutes, or until cold. Do not pour hot tea into the serving glasses.
- While the tea chills, squeeze and strain enough lemons to reach the amount of juice in the ingredient list. Add the measured cold water in a second measuring jug and stir.
- Set out one clear 12 oz glass per serving and divide the lemon mixture evenly among them.
- Divide the measured ice evenly among the glasses, leaving at least 1 inch of empty space at the top.
- Pour the chilled blue tea into a small, easy-to-hold pitcher. At the table, divide it slowly and evenly among the glasses and watch the drink change from blue toward violet or purple as it meets the lemon.
- Stir each drink once and serve immediately. An adult should supervise the hot-water steps and the tabletop pour.

How the Halloween color change works
Butterfly pea flowers contain pH-sensitive pigments. The tea is blue before it meets the lemon; the acid shifts it toward violet, purple or pink. The exact shade depends on the tea, lemon acidity and dilution, so do not promise children one precise color.
Buy plain food-grade butterfly pea flower tea bags intended for drinking. Avoid blends containing alcohol-based extracts, bitters or stimulant ingredients. This recipe is caffeine-free when the package contains butterfly pea flower only, but check the label because packaged blends differ.
Fresh lemon juice makes the change visible and gives the drink its lemonade flavor. Two tablespoons of sugar soften the acidity without turning the drink into syrup. If your lemons are especially sharp, taste the finished drink and add more sugar only to a future batch; extra sugar changes the calorie estimate.
Use clear glasses so the transformation is easy to see. Keep the hot-water work with an adult, chill the tea fully, and give a child only the small cool pitcher for the final pour. Use plain food-grade butterfly pea flower tea bags with no extracts, bitters or alcohol-containing flavorings. Calories count the sugar and lemon juice; the tea bags are discarded after steeping and the ice and water add no calories. Lemon acidity and tea strength change the final shade.
