Christmas Gingerbread Dark Rum Cream Martini

Shake 45 ml dark rum, 30 ml cream, 30 ml milk, 5 ml molasses and 5 ml maple syrup with ginger and cinnamon. Makes one Christmas gingerbread rum martini in 8 minutes; approximately 255 kcal and 16% ABV before ice dilution, excluding optional toppings.

A Christmas Gingerbread Dark Rum Cream Martini brings the flavors of gingerbread into a cold, creamy dessert cocktail without relying on a flavored vodka or bottled gingerbread liqueur. Dark rum provides the spirit base; unsulfured molasses, maple syrup, ginger and cinnamon create the cookie-like spice. This is an adult drink made with real rum, not a children's milkshake.

How to make it

How we test recipes

  1. Put a martini glass in the freezer for a few minutes. If using the optional cookie rim, crush 1 tablespoon of gingerbread cookie onto a saucer, lightly brush the outside rim with 1 teaspoon of extra maple syrup, then dip it into the crumbs. Return the glass to the freezer while you mix the drink.
  2. Add the dark rum, heavy cream and whole milk to a cocktail shaker without ice.
  3. Add 1 teaspoon unsulfured molasses, 1 teaspoon maple syrup, ground ginger and ground cinnamon. Stir with a spoon until the molasses is dispersed; otherwise it can cling to the bottom of the shaker.
  4. Add about 1 cup of ice cubes, seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside feels cold.
  5. Fine-strain into the chilled glass, leaving the shaker ice behind. The cocktail should be pale tan and lightly frothy.
  6. If desired, add 2 tablespoons whipped cream, sift 1/4 teaspoon cocoa powder over it, rest the small gingerbread cookie against the rim and add a cinnamon stick. Remove the stick before drinking. Serve immediately.

Recipe notes

Estimated 255 kcal for the liquid ingredients only, assuming 40% ABV dark rum, whole milk and heavy cream. Approximately 16% ABV before ice dilution and typically 12–13% after shaking; bottle strength and dilution vary. Keep dairy cold. Not yet physically tested or tasted by the owner.

What does gingerbread rum martini taste like?

Expect a creamy, mildly sweet drink with dark-rum warmth, a molasses note and the familiar ginger-and-cinnamon aroma of gingerbread. Molasses is concentrated: one teaspoon is intentional. Blackstrap molasses is more bitter, so choose ordinary unsulfured molasses for the first attempt. If you prefer less sweetness, reduce the maple syrup to 1/2 teaspoon; this changes the nutrition estimate slightly.

Can I make it ahead?

You can measure the rum, cream, milk, molasses, maple and spices into a covered container and refrigerate for a few hours. Whisk or shake the mixture before use because the spices settle. Do not add ice until serving, and keep dairy refrigerated. Shake individual servings with fresh ice; whipped cream and the cookie rim are best added at the last moment.

Is this the same as a Brandy Alexander or a Snowball cocktail?

No. A classic Brandy Alexander uses brandy and crème de cacao, while a Snowball typically uses advocaat with citrus and fizzy lemonade. This version uses dark rum, real dairy, molasses and gingerbread spices, without chocolate liqueur or advocaat. Calories, alcohol strength and testing note

The base drink is approximately 255 kcal, calculated from 45 ml of 40% ABV rum, 30 ml heavy cream, 30 ml whole milk, 5 ml molasses and 5 ml maple syrup; spices contribute very little. Cookie crumbs, extra maple on the rim, whipped cream, cocoa and cookie garnish add calories and are not included. The liquid ingredients contain about 16% ABV before shaking; water from melted ice usually lowers the served strength to approximately 12–13%. Rum strengths and dilution vary.
